Lactobacillus acidophilus

Rob (PHH)

Name Ingredients:

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a bacteria which is normally isolated from fermented foods. It is typically used for its reported ability to increase the production of keratin and to promote a healthy gut microbiome which may also benefit hair health. It can be obtained on its own or as an ingredient.

Key insights:

  • There do not appear to be any in vitro studies investigating the effects of L. acidophilus on hair health.
  • The in vivo evidence suggests that oral administration of L. acidophilus (in combination with L. reuteri) improved hair quality in dogs, suppressing hair shedding and reducing levels of sebum and dandruff. However, because it was in combination with another probiotic, it is not possible to know whether L. acidophilus contributed to the positive effects.
  • One clinical study suggests that oral administration of L. acidophilus (combined with several other bacterial strains) improved hair density, reduced hair loss, and relieved itchy scalp. However, because it was combined with other ingredients, it is impossible to know whether L. acidophilus contributed to the positive effects.
  • Our experience tracking members: L. acidophilus alone is not enough to improve hair loss outcomes.
