Tea Tree Oil

Rob (PHH)

Name Ingredients:

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is an essential oil that comes from steaming the leaves of the Australian tea tree. Topical tea tree oil is thought to have antibacterial and antifungal properties, which may benefit hair health.

Key insights:

  • The in vitro evidence suggests that tea tree oil has antifungal properties that might support hair growth. Furthermore, tea tree oil has been effective against Malassezia species, which can cause skin infections that can lead to hair loss. However, there don’t appear to be any clinical studies to show that tea tree oil can rescue Malassezia-induced hair loss.
  • While there doesn’t appear to be clinical evidence to show that tea tree oil enhances hair growth, 5% tea tree oil shampoo used daily for 4 weeks does appear to improve dandruff severity and improve patient self–assessment of scaliness.
  • Our experience tracking members: by itself, tea tree oil extract is not enough to improve hair loss outcomes.
