Key insights:
- The in vitro evidence shows that beta-sitosterol can inhibit 5α-reductase; however, the only clinical studies that we could find have used beta-sitosterol in combination with other ingredients, so it is not possible to know if these effects are due to beta-sitosterol or other ingredients.
- There does not appear to be any clinical evidence to suggest that beta-sitosterol alone can improve hair loss. However, some studies include beta-sitosterol as an ingredient in either supplements or topicals.
- Our experience tracking members: Beta-sitosterol by itself is not enough to improve hair loss outcomes.
