Calcium

Rob (PHH)

Name Ingredients:

Calcium is one of the most abundant trace minerals in the body, most well-known for its involvement in bone and tooth health.

Key insights:

  • Aside from in cases of extreme deficiency, calcium imbalances do not appear to cause hair loss. Furthermore, in cases where calcium deficiency is mentioned in the context of hair loss, it’s usually due to another cause (for example vitamin D deficient animals fed a low-calcium diet develop alopecia).
  • High calcium has been associated with hair loss in cases of hyperparathyroidism (an overproduction of the hormone that helps your body manage calcium levels).
  • There is no in vitro or in vivo evidence to suggest that calcium supplementation might support hair growth.
  • The one study in humans that we found testing calcium supplementation on hair growth for women with diffuse hair loss determined that there was no clear effect on hair growth.
  • Our experience tracking members: calcium by itself is not enough to improve hair loss outcomes.
