Grape Seed Extract

Rob (PHH)

Name Ingredients:

Grape seed extract is a derivative of whole grape seeds. The extract is a source of antioxidants through its high content of proanthocyanidins, a type of polyphenol. Grape seed extract is promoted as an antimicrobial, and also has properties that assist in wound healing and inflammation. This extract is used in many hair products and is promoted to hydrate hair and increase hair shine.

Key insights:

  • Evidence in vitro shows that proanthocyanidins isolated from grape seeds can increase mouse hair follicle cell proliferation by 230% compared to the controls (100%). However, the researchers do not elaborate on which hair follicle cells they completed their experiments on. The researchers suggest that the mechanism of action is due to its ability to prevent terminal differentiation of cells thus allowing cells to maintain their growing phase.
  • Evidence in vivo (8-week-old mice) shows that topical application of proanthocyanidins derived from grape seed extract for 19 days led to 80-90% of hair coverage, compared to 90-100% after 1% minoxidil treatment and 30-40% after treatment with a control substance. At 8 weeks old, the mice should be in the (non-growing) telogen stage of the hair follicle cycle, therefore the researchers suggest that grape seed extract induces the growing stage (anagen). The researchers suggest that the topical treatment may work in a similar way to minoxidil. These findings however have never been confirmed in humans.
