Sanguisorba officinalis

Rob (PHH)

Name Ingredients:

Sanguisorba officinalis or great burnet, is a plant commonly found through regions of the Northern Hemisphere of Europe, Northern Asia, and northern North America. In hair treatments, it is thought to assist in the prevention of hair loss and increase hair length.

Key insights:

  • The in vitro data suggests that Sanguisorba officinalis inhibits fibroblast growth factor 5 (FGF 5) – which is an inhibitor of hair follicle growth and is involved in the transition from the growing (anagen) phase to the catagen (resting) phase.
  • The in vivo (in animals) data suggests that while Sanguisorba officinalis did not improve the onset of new hair growth, it did reduce the number of telogen (non-growing) phase hair follicles and increased hair length.
  • A small double-blind clinical study was conducted on 39 participants over 4 months. The study showed that Sanguisorba officinalis could reduce the number of shed hairs (~70%) and decrease the number of vellus hairs while increasing the growth rate and the ratio of growing to non-growing hairs. Subjective assessments found that 74% of the treated group found the extract “somewhat effective”, “effective”, or “very effective” compared to 25% of the control.
